About

WHERE ARE WE GOING, WALT WHITMAN? An ecosophical roadmap for artists and other futurists is a rambling project organised by Studium Generale Rietveld Academie in the academic year 2012-2013.

ROADMAP: the project will not map a North, South, East, West. No upside, no downside, no center, no periphery, no order, no border. It rather reveals a meshwork of criss cross paths, rhythms and flows. It wants to be a guide for self-learners wishing to think freely and critically about and through art and “a thousand ecologies”.  The Roadmap-section on this website offers you a living research archive with visual and textual references; books, portraits, poems, quotes, (moving) images and links to other websites and blogs. Read more.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM & CONFERENCE – FESTIVAL: On 8 Wednesday afternoons in November and December 2012 and in January and February 2013, WAWGWW presents a regular series of events; lectures, spoken columns, readings, screenings and seminars that set out to introduce you to notions such as the anthropocene, animism, deep ecology, dark ecology, political ecology, ecology of (live) art, ecology of cinema, queer ecology, (new) materialism, vitalism, eco-anarchism, eco-poetics, ecology of mind, ecology of matter, ecology with and ecology without nature, all leading up to an energetic 4 day conference- festival in March.

STUDIUM GENERALE is the Rietveld’s extensive transdisciplinary theory program that addresses students and faculty at all departments of the academy as well as the general public. It wants to understand how art and design are always entangled with other domains (from the personal to the political, from the vernacular to the academic), how our ‘now’ is linked with past and future, our ‘here’ with ‘elsewhere’. In the belief that art students can only learn to think independently when knowledge, imagination and reflection combine to work together in an unorthodox and critical way, Studium Generale invites you to join it’s annually settled, slightly unruly, but always very relevant research trajectories.

In order to be able to tap into the most contemporary art world discourses, the most distinguished practitioners from all over the (art)world are invited to fuel the debate inside the Rietveld Academie.
